Mastering Summer Walleyes

When summertime rolls around, fans of walleye fishing eagerly take to the lake in search of this elusive and highly sought-after freshwater species. During this season, walleye must be caught using a tactical approach that considers their behavior and preferred habitats. The strategies and advice in this article will help anglers become better summer walleye fisherman.

Understanding walleye behavior during the summer is essential for productive fishing. During this time of year, walleye frequently migrate to deeper waters in order to escape the scorching surface temperatures. They frequently are found close to areas like drop-offs, underwater humps, weed edges, and rocky areas. Anglers can improve their chances of finding walleye hotspots by getting to know these patterns.

2. Perfecting the Presentation:

In order to get a more productive walleye bite, anglers must present their baits and lures in an enticing manner. Slow and deliberate movements are key when fishing for walleye in the summer. Techniques such as vertical jigging, trolling with live bait, and slip-bobber fishing are highly effective. Remember, there is also a time when fast action can be used. Those prime times of the day, morning and evening are a great time to experiment with different presentation styles. The fish will most aggressive due to the feeding windows. Experimenting with different retrieval speeds and lure colors can also help determine the walleye's preferences on a given day.

3. Live Bait and Artificial Lures:

Anglers have a range of bait options at their disposal when targeting summer walleye. Live bait, such as leeches, nightcrawlers, and minnows, are popular choices. These can be rigged on jigs, spinners, or used with a slip-bobber setup. Additionally, artificial lures like crankbaits, jerkbaits, and soft plastics can mimic the movements of prey, enticing walleye strikes. A combination of live bait and artificial lures can be an effective strategy. Personally my favorite way to target summer walleyes is to troll spinner rings near weed beds. On my home body of water, pulling a spinner rig with a crawler in 8-10 ft of water can be very deadly.

4. Timing is Everything:

Walleye activity levels can vary throughout the day, so timing plays a crucial role in summer fishing success. Early morning and late evening are typically prime times, as walleye are more active during low-light conditions. However, don't overlook midday opportunities, especially on overcast days or when fishing in deeper water. These areas can be productive throughout the day. Learning where these fish are out in the deep water can help you find them in the shallower areas come later in the year. Adapting to the specific conditions and adjusting fishing times accordingly can significantly improve catch rates.

5. Paying Attention to Water Temperature and Weather:

Monitoring water temperature and weather conditions is essential when targeting walleye in the summer. Warmer water temperatures push walleye deeper, while cooler temperatures might bring them closer to the surface. Factors like wind direction, cloud cover, and barometric pressure can also impact their behavior. By understanding these variables, anglers can adjust their techniques and locations accordingly, increasing their chances of success.

I hope the next time you get out, you think about these things. Don't get stuck on one spot. Summer fishing is all about finding aggressive fish. Water temperature plays a large role in this. 70 degree and up can tend to make walleyes a bit more sluggish come 10am to midway and will start to pick up as the evening comes. Good luck on your next adventure!
