Wader Fishing Fall Walleyes

Evening of Saturday October 8th, Ann and I decided to go out with a few friends to try some walleye fishing. Typically, this is the time of year when water temps are around 58 degree and starts to bring those fish into the shallow waters. The lake we were fishing is a vegetation lake. As the vegetation starts to die off, all the fish will start to push into the shallows. That could include, rock structure, vegetation, or flowing water.

We got there right around 6:30, a little before sundown. This is the best time to catch a walleye. Fish an hour before and after sunup and fish another hour before and after sundown. Put 4 hours in a day in high potential spots, you are bound to have better success.

That being said, we started casting white plastics with an 1/8th ounce jig head. the plastic we were mostly using is the custom jigs and spins 3.23 pulser in the white color. White is a good overall color with any plastic. Was using a Fenwick Techna spinning rod paired with a Pflueger supreme XT. I like using Light to Medium Light action rods for wader fishing. I can feel those light bites that can happen. Also, when fishing around weeds or structure, you can feel what you are dragging your jig through. The more you fish, the more you will understand what each of them feels like.

The first bite came right away and never look backed there. The lakes we were fishing had a slot limit of 19 inches to 25 inches. That means, that all the fish that were in that slot limit, had to be released. You are allowed, 3 walleyes per day.

We had an absolute blast. We came home with 2 shy of a 5-man limit. Caught many more that fell either in the too small category or into the slot that had to be released.

Overall, a great weekend of fishing!
